From Mill to Drill
Getting steel products to where they’re needed, fast, is part of our job at Continental Alloys & Services. Sometimes, the steel and the client who needs it are half a world apart.
Getting steel products to where they’re needed, fast, is part of our job at Continental Alloys & Services. Sometimes, the steel and the client who needs it are half a world apart.
A Continental Alloys & Services client in the United States needs 132,276 pounds (60,000 kg) of 5.5-inch (140-mm) 17# 13CR80 SMLS casing. Continental tracks down the material at a mill in Bilbao, Spain.
The casing is put onto a ferry in Spain and sent 889 miles (1,430 km) by sea to the Netherlands for packing and preparation. It is then loaded onto a chartered Martin Air DC-10 aircraft for a 4,614-mile (7,425-km) flight to the United States. Total distance covered: 5,503 miles (8,856 km).
The loaded Martin Air DC-10 takes off from the Netherlands on a Friday night and arrives in the U.S. the next morning. The cargo is pre-cleared en route, expediting the customs process. By Monday morning, Continental has the cargo in hand.
Sixty-six tons of steel travelled from a mill in Spain to an oilfield in the United States in less than five working days. The entire process was coordinated by Continental’s logistics department.
